Making a video

Write a short brief, choose a length, voice and style, and follow your video through the queue until it is ready.

Write the brief

Anyone in the workspace can make a video of a connected app, except one set to forget its sign-in after each video: in the dashboard, only owners and admins can start those. Through your AI assistant, anyone in the workspace can start one and gets a sign-in link. See Connecting an app.

  1. Choose New video.
  2. Pick the App to film.
  3. Under What should the video show?, describe one task in a sentence or two, the way you’d explain it to a new user. Name the pages and buttons it should use.
  4. If you like, fill in Audience (optional), such as “prospective customers”, so the narration speaks to them.
  5. Choose the length, narration and style below, then choose Create video.

Choose a length

Every Length is a maximum. The video runs as long as the task needs, up to the length you pick:

  • Up to 45 seconds
  • Up to 1 minute
  • Up to 1 minute 15 seconds
  • Up to 1 minute 30 seconds
  • Up to 2 minutes
  • As long as it takes (up to 10 minutes)

As long as it takes (up to 10 minutes) is for paid videos. It’s quoted at the most your balance pays for. Free videos are up to 60 seconds.

With credits, the form quotes the length you pick. You're never charged more than this quote; a shorter video costs less.

Voice, narration and captions

Under Narration, choose:

  • With narration
  • No narration (silent video, 25% less)

With narration, pick a Voice. Each voice card plays a sample. A silent video costs 25% less.

The captions box is ticked to start with, and its label follows your choice. Untick it to keep the words off the picture. A narrated video still comes with its captions as a file, which viewers can turn on in the player. A silent video with the box unticked has no step labels at all:

  • Captions: the spoken words, shown on the video
  • Step labels: a short line on screen for each step

Walkthrough or showcase

Video style sets the tone. Walkthrough is the default:

  • Walkthrough: step by step, for docs and help centres
  • Showcase: descriptive, for social media and launches

The queue and progress

After Create video, you land on the video’s page. While the video waits its turn, it shows Queued, usually with how many videos are ahead of yours. A longer video, or one waiting for your other videos to finish, says so instead of giving a count. Once it starts, it shows Running, and the progress panel names each stage:

  1. Exploring your app
  2. Writing the script
  3. Recording the voiceover
  4. Filming the demo
  5. Rendering

Videos up to 2 minutes usually take 10–15 minutes; longer ones up to 2 hours. You don’t need to wait on the page: we email you when the video is ready, and in the meantime the Dashboard lists it under In production.

If something goes wrong, see Fixing and re-recording.
